Thomas Howard dies in car crash

NFL linebacker Thomas Howard died on Monday after being involved in a multi-car accident.

Thomas Howard, a linebacker who played for the Raiders, Bengals and Falcons, was killed in a car accident on Monday, according to a report from KRON 4. Howard was 30 years old.

According to the report, Howard was one of two people killed in a multi-car accident early Monday morning. Witnesses said Howard was driving at a high rate of speed on Highway 880 in California when he lost control of his car and collided with the back of a tractor trailer. Howard's car then crossed the median into oncoming traffic where it hit  two other cars, including a head-on collision with a Honda CR-V.

Police said Howard's BMW was overturned when they arrived. Officers and fire department personnel were unable to aid Howard or the driver of Honda due to extensive damage to the vehicles. Both died at the scene. According to reports, Howard's car rolled over several times after hitting the tractor trailer. California Highway Patrol Sgt. Robert Cullinan said Howard's BMW was traveling at more than 100 mph, according to KTVU.com. Cullinan said the force of the impact between Howard's car and the Honda disintegrated both vehicles.

Howard spent parts of eight seasons in the NFL, including five with the Oakland Raiders. He signed with Atlanta this offseason and was released by the team earlier this month.
